Somebody cries in the middle of the night.

The neighbors hear, but they turn out the lights.

A fragile soul caught in the hands of fate-

When morning comes, it’ll be too late.

Martina McBride, Concrete Angel

The month of April has been National Child Abuse Prevention Month since 1983. According to a 2015 report by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, around 683,000 American children were abused or neglected that year. Out of these, 1,670 children died as a result. According to the National Child Traumatic Stress Network, several key factors can be used to prevent these tragedies. These include “parental resilience, nurturing and attachment, social connections, knowledge about parenting and child development, social and emotional competence of children, and concrete supports for parents.”

In Martina McBride’s catchy but somber song, Concrete Angel, an abused little girl’s teacher and neighbors notice signs of her abuse but don’t bother to investigate. It’s a situation that happens all too often. Always remember that children aren’t little adults who know what to do, nor are they their parents’ property. Their safety is everyone’s business. Don’t ignore your gut feelings, and as a parent, always be mindful of how your words and actions might affect your child.
