June Literacy Spotlight Activities!

By: Kate Quattlebaum

Each month, two books are selected for our Childcare Network classrooms with the goal of promoting literacy and character development in conjunction with our HighReach Learning Curriculum. In this blog post you'll find activities you can do at home with your child!

Throughout the month of June, our Infant through 2 Year Olds classrooms are reading I Am So Brave! by Stephen Krensky. Talk to the children about transition times and waving goodbye or blowing kisses when loved ones leave. Sing the song below with the children and encourage them to imitate your actions.

Open and shut them
Open and shut them
Raise your hands up high (raise hands)
Open and shut them
Open and shut them
Time to say goodbye
Goodbye! (wave goodbye)

The 3 Year Olds to School Aged classrooms are reading
When Sophie's Feelings are Really, Really, Hurt by Molly Bang. Review all of the feelings words (Angry, Sad, Excited, Happy, Proud, Shy) with the children then invite them to say the action rhyme below with you. Be silly and dramatic as you say the words – they will love it!

Sometimes on my face you’ll see, (point to face)
How I feel inside of me. (point to chest)
A smile means happy, (smile)
A frown means sad. (frown)
And gritting my teeth, means really mad! (grit teeth)
But when I’m proud I beam and glow, (smile and poke out chest)
And when I’m shy my head hands low. (bow head and hide face)

There's more benefits to these activities than just bringing the story to life. Post reading activities are a great way to build reading comprehension skills. We'll see you next month with our July Literacy Spotlight!
