June Literacy Spotlight!

By: Kate Quattlebaum

June-Literacy-SpotlightEach month, two books are selected for our Childcare Network classrooms with the goal of promoting literacy and character development in conjunction with our HighReach Learning Curriculum. These books are carefully selected by our education specialists to use a variety of experiences to connect emerging language and literacy with social-emotional development.

During the month of June, our Infants through 2 year old classrooms are reading I Am So Brave! by Stephen Krensky. This book celebrates children growing out of toddlerhood with courage and success. Whether it’s petting a dog or waving good-bye to a parent, this book addresses the “small wins” of growing and becoming just a little bit braver. While exploring this story children will learn about feelings, practice new skills, and talk about facing their fears!

The 3 year old to school age classrooms are reading Today I Feel Silly and Other Moods that Make My Day by Jamie Lee Curtis. This story helps kids explore, identify, and even have fun with their ever- changing moods. Silly, cranky, excited, or sad—everyone has moods that can change each day. And that’s okay! Follow the boisterous, bouncing lead character as she explores her moods and how they change from day to day. Reading this story will encourage children to talk about their feelings and emotions as well as explore feelings-based vocabulary.

Stay tuned for some more reading fun! Along with each book, several book-related activities are provided to reinforce the social-emotional skill. Follow-up questions are also included as well to assist with reading comprehension.

We invite prospective parents to drop on by any of our preschool locations nationwide and see why Childcare Network is more than just a day care.
